The Work Continues

A full day at Kachere. Joyce Westlake and Maureen Bird have taken on a sewing project with the Kachere ladies. We hope to make over 100 washable sanitary napkin kits for the senior girls at Mbidi School and some of the Teen Club. We were greeted by 15 of the women who worked with us for hours, cutting, pinning and sewing. We have given them two sewing machines in the past and the new fancy one arrived this morning. These are all treadles which I haven’t touched in 55 years!! But we managed very well. Of course, the drive belt on the new machine caught and broke before we even got to the first seam….But with some ingenuity, we repaired it and got it going. All wanted to help with varying abilities. Fortunately, two of the women are comfortable with the very basic machines. Wednesday we will be in Blantyre and will get to the store to get a review of all the new functions of the new machine as well as buying some flannel — if available. It is wonderful to be back and we look forward to more days with the ladies.
