We are now well immersed in Haiti and have all been surprised at the activity and vibrancy of Port au Prince. 

The only two signs of the earthquake albeit it was in 2010 is the open space where the National Palace was and the Rex Theatre close by which has been left to stand as a memorial. There are still hanging chunks of concrete. We are, however, reminded of the quake on the job site as we pick up chunks of rubble from the walls of the school and cart them off by wheelbarrow.

 

 

 It is a hard job but pales beside what it must have been like to clean up the pieces of concrete from the earthquake.

The school is well run, the children very clean, polite and well turned out in their pink school uniforms. 

From what we can tell, the curriculum is well thought out and the teachers are well dressed ..better than ours at home and have good control of the classes which are small..no more than 20 in a class.  Recess is fun. Mary, Widit and Caroline lead the “head and shoulders” routine as well as the “hokey pokey”. They were also active participants along with Jim, Brian, Paul, Chris, Daniel and Errol in the UBB – the United Bucket Brigade – a formidable group of cement pourers.

We head out today to the country side to see a very different part of Haiti which you can see the mountainous scenery.
