Final Day of Work in El Salvador

By Widit McLean

Friday was our last work day, and we managed to at least partially paint two houses. Then we handed out gift baskets (purchased by members of our group) to the owners of seven of the new houses.

Visiting

By Widit McLean

On Thursday, January 16, Hellie and Widit went to Asilo Santa Teresita Seniors’ Residence with Fantina and Marta Sonia who are both members of Tito’s Rotary Club which supports the residence and will be providing a fixed amount of money for food over the next few months. On the way, we stopped to buy some dry-goods to help replenish their pantry.

The residence is run by three Franciscan Sisters and they currently have five residents who otherwise would have limited or no care due to difficult family circumstances. The residents range in age from 63 (a woman with Down’s Syndrome) to 94, and seem content. There is an atmosphere of tranquility and love, despite the lack of material possessions. The building and grounds are bright and clean, with flowers, and various areas designated for sleeping, eating and relaxation.

Thursday’s Work

By Fred Chenoweth

Another day in paradise. Beautiful morning glorious sunshine, flocks of birds flitting among multi-coloured tree blossoms. On the way to the job site, we stopped to restock on water, Coke, beer, ice, chips, Oreos and other necessities for the day. Another stop made to purchase shoes, crocs and runners for some of the families in the village.

We were excited to find on arrival that the locals had made significant progress in our day’s absence from the site. Two of the homes were now roofed along with necessary electrical wiring and a partial coat of parging. We spent our day completing the parging and base coating and the walls on two homes. We had the good fortune to hide from the direct sunlight throughout the hotter parts of the day.

We had a long conversation with Luis Escobar. Luis is a civil engineer and our on-site manager. Louise was more than pleased to have Rotary’s help on site and expressed that he thought all of the Rotarians in attendance had great hearts.

We presented a mattress and box springs donated by the Rotary Club Of Picton to one of the village single moms of two gorgeous young kitties . She was extremely grateful. The Rotary Club of Toronto was kind enough to also purchase a propane table top stove for this worthy family.

Tonight we attend a meeting with the Rotary Club of San Salvador Noroeste. They have been extremely helpful and monitored our progress throughout.
