We arrived!!!
On April 30th, the team left Toronto at 8:00 a.m. for Washington and then spent almost 14 hours on the flight to Addis, Ethiopia. A few of us even stopped in at a local airport café to sample some local food before catching our final flight to Lilongwe. We were met by our partner, Paul Jones at the airport and then travelled by bus for several hours to our overnight stay at Dzeda. Some of us viewed the pottery shop that was on the grounds of our hotel. We had an early night as most of us were weary and tired from 24 hours of travel.
On May 2nd, we travelled by bus along the highway headed to Zomba. On one side was Malawi and on the other side was Mozambique. The countryside was very beautiful with the mountains and valleys surrounding us. Along the way we stopped on the roadside for a photo stop and were able to visit with a local family where we met the many members including a young infant. We continued seeing the many locals walking along the roadside and the various markets selling vegetables and other goods in the small villages. We arrived in Zomba and took a quick tour of the town by bus and later walked through the outdoor market. Paul organized a contest to see who could get the most local items for the least amount of Kwachas. The shopkeepers were all very helpful and wanting to help us find our eggs, bananas, cups, plates, socks, a broom, a mop and several other items. Chris and Karen each won a chocolate bar! We then became familiar with our “home” for the next 3 weeks, Annie’s Lodge. Check back again soon.
