From the Floor Up by Hand

On this work site there is no big machinery, tractors, rollers, backhoes, compactors or snorkel lifts.  Nope…it’s all by hand.  The only power equipment is the cement mixer, a new addition from our last trip.

It’s a heavy, hot job done by even the small woman (with big muscles) and they show us how to do it.  They just keep going like the energizer bunnies without a complaint and always a smile or a chuckle every time you pass them.

First you back fill the foundation areas then apply lots of water to compact the area.  Next you carry loads of heavy rock to be placed uniformly around the area.  Then with a tree trunk about one meter long attached to a 2 x 2 on both sides, you pound the rocks into the compacted sand.  Did I mention this is all done by hand ?  You then wheel the cement mixer into place and start mixing and pouring the floor.

Finally, you gently kiss the cement mixer after each batch till the floor is finished!
