First Impressions Will Last

Rotarians Briefed

Finally in Siem Reap, Rotarians from District 7070 were given the royal treatment at the aiport by our host, Ronnie Yismut and the kind staff from the Ta Prohm Hotel.  For many in our group, this was about returning to greet old friends from past Sweat Equity trips, and for others just a fabulous introduction to Cambodian hosptiality.  Jim Stewart and Ronnie Yismut introduced the project which will be our focus for the next couple of weeks – the Bakong Technical School.  Ronnie spoke to us about his drive behind the project and his committment to creating a culture of volunteerism in Cambodia – something which just doesn’t exist in any strong form now.  And I could hear everyone in the group silently rising to this challenge:  who better than Rotarians to walk the talk of  ‘service above self’?

First Impressions

Worn out from the overseas journey, and in sensory overload from the experience of the surrounding marketplace, the first impression from the airport has lasted through the day.  The Cambodian people all present a gentle way of moving through their lives, with little fuss or extraneous motion:  the city, despite its busy-ness is actually very calm and quiet.  Everyone who’s helped us today has struck our group as being  disposed first towards kindness and welcoming, and – if Ronnie and his team are examples – committed to their community.

Looking forward to tomorrow!
