Dignitas Winding Down Operations – June 2019

Message from Chris Snyder,

Hello All

It is with great sadness I forward to you information on the winding down of Dignitas International.

For those who have been with us to Malawi, I am sure you will agree with my sentiments. On the other hand, I know of no organization who made such a difference in such a short period of time. Among other things, well over 1 million people were tested for AIDS and several hundred thousand people were put on life-saving drugs. These are the numbers but being involved with James Orbinski and James Fraser and the privilege of assisting with the AIDS crisis in a small way had a profound effect on me and I suspect you also. Some of this is reflected in my book “Creating Opportunities” and I will have a blog later this week with further reflections.

As the Buddhists say “nothing is forever”, however, the ripple effect from Dignitas will continue. I hope it will inspire you as it has me to continue to do good work in whatever way you can.

In concert with this announcement is a movie about Dignitas and the work they/we did. Rotary gave them their first donation, kept them going during difficult times and were with them to the end. A link to the movie is attached. https://youtu.be/7o9bjTqDPD8 It lasts about 30 minutes. Please pass this on to whomever you believe could be interested. I personally believe it could be of interest to anyone interested in humanitarian work and the good we humans can do.

Best
Chris Snyder, Co-ordinator of District 7070 Rotary Sweat Equity Programs

As many of you know, I published a new book, “Creating Opportunities: A Volunteer’s Memoir” last year. I have created a Facebook page around volunteering and am contacting you to ask if you will consider “liking” and “sharing” this page to your contacts. https://www.facebook.com/70YearVolunteer/

My book chronicles the experiences I have had volunteering, and includes questions and answers for people to consider with regard to their own volunteering and personal growth. In addition to being of interest to individuals, “Creating Opportunities” is also a useful resource for schools, whether used by students and teachers in Civics and World Issues classes, or utilized in Guidance Departments or Libraries.

The book is available for purchase for $26.91 a copy, or $14.95 for a Kindle edition. If you are interested in purchasing the book, please click here: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07H48FFN6/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

If you know of someone who may find this book of interest, or are interested in buying multiple copies at a discount (for a classroom, school or organization), please contact me by email – and I will be happy to help you with that.

Volunteering has been one of the richest experiences of my life, and I hope to share that with many others.

All the best,
Chris
