Today we all left Moshi and drove up to Kilema where we picked up Joseph, Cynoc and sister Anna. We also spent a few minutes checking out the billeting for tomorrow. From there we drove to Kirua Clinic where we dropped off Kate, sister Anna and Marie. They were going to spend the day assessing the clinic. At the end of the day we found out that great improvements have been made since last year and a lot of their container had already been unpacked. Kate had a much more positive outlook on this clinic compared to yesterdays. She even got to witness first hand an HIV test on a gentleman (thankfully negative).

Roger, Bill, Maddie and myself along with Joseph and Cynoc from the Kilema club drove to the Marangu Hospital where we met with some of their staff and some members of their Rotary Club. They have very well maintained, clean and beautiful premises, however, they are in short supply of equipment. They pitched the need for equipment and also a need for clean drinking water where there is no existing infrastructure at all. They have also built a building where they hope to provide an old age home. However it is only a shell with nothing else finished. The idea is there as it is the one area apparently in Tanzania where they have a considerable aging population that is showing significant numbers of diabetes, hypertension and senile dementia in that generation.

From there we headed to Mamba for a two o’clock Rotary meeting with their club. It was held in a Church with about 20 members present. About 15 minutes into the meeting they brought in about 150 students who sang to us and sat there as good as gold. The Mamba club has similar needs to a lot of other areas with regards to their clinic being unequipped, poor water supply, etc. However one prominent need was obvious and that was although there are some “crude” bathroom facilities for the children there is absolutely no hand washing area available.
