Rotarians Travel to Tanzania
Fourteen Rotarians and friends are making their way to the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania. This will be the ninth time that a team of District 7070 Rotarians and friends have visited the Kilema rural region with a population of about 250,000. We keep going, even though no one looks forward to the extremely flight to get there!
One of the most significant events during the year has been the installation of electricity to the remote Nganjoni Health Clinic, built in 2009 with Canadian government money. No equipment was provided at that time. Four years ago this installation became the first priority, before any hospital equipment could be provided. This occurred in July of 2013 as shown in the photo. Twelve poles were needed to reach the clinic. Then the equipment, providing child and maternal health and successful birthing, could be shipped. The clinic received the equipment in early December, 2013, and is now functioning. An official opening will occur on January 21st, 2014, while the team is in Tanzania.
Two members of the team, who have a gluten intolerance are again looking forward to Kilimanjaro beer upon arrival. Brewed with locally grown wheat, the beer’s ingredients do not present a problem as they do at home. They can even eat the local bread.
So think of us sitting outside looking at the stars on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro sipping on a cool one after a long hot day!
